Startup Weekend: Create Impact

PITCH TO PROTOTYPE IN 3 DAYS (FRI, Feb. 24 - SUN, Feb. 26)

One Weekend is all it takes to learn how to make your dreams a reality. Pitch idea. Form team. Launch company. It’s that simple! Be a part of the first Fort Collins Startup Weekend!

No previous experience required. Engineering, Computer Sciences, Business/ Non-Technical, Design fields encouraged to participate!

The Inaugural Fort Collins Startup Weekend hosted by The Colorado State University College of Business and Institute for Entrepreneurship invites entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs from all departments at CSU and the greater Fort Collins community to take an idea from nothing to something, pitch to prototype, in a three-day immersive workshop. (Get ready to work a little past bedtime!)

Startup Weekend propels participants to launch creative business, product, or service ideas by implementing the Lean Startup process. It starts by allowing anyone to pitch ideas, form teams around the top ideas, research their customers, and work intensely as teams to build a prototype that demonstrates the potential of their business. The event culminates in a pitch competition where teams present their business and demonstrate their prototype to a panel of experienced entrepreneurs.

In just 54 hours, you will experience the highs, lows, fun, and pressure that make up life at a startup. As you learn how to create a real company, you will meet experienced mentors, investors, co-founders, and sponsors who are ready to help you get started. Food, coffee, and soft drinks will be provided for the weekend.

Sunday Night Pitch Event

On Sunday, February 26, Startup Weekend participants will highlight their progress, innovation, and creativity in a “Shark Tank” style pitch to three judges. The judges will consist of three seasoned entrepreneurs. They will award the best two pitches, and the prizes will include in-kind donations from our sponsors and partners! If you are NOT participating in Startup Weekend, you will need to buy a ticket for the Pitch Event. (It's on the eventbrite)

NO TECHNOLOGY SKILLS REQUIRED

Any college student or community member (You do not have to live in Fort Collins) interested in startups, launching a business, entrepreneurship, or creative problem solving is encouraged to register. Startup Weekend demands teamwork, creativity, and determination! External experts with business and technical experience will help mentor teams, however, it is up to the participants to push the limits of their comfort zone and learn new skills.

NO TALK, ALL ACTION

Startup Weekend demands teamwork, creativity, determination, and focus from all participants. While Startup Weekend organizers and mentors will be on hand to help, every team will manage itself to optimize time.

Powered by Google for Entrepreneurs and Techstars, Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of passionate entrepreneurs with a mission to inspire, educate, and empower communities to launch revolutionary ideas.

Hosted by Colorado State University, this will be the first Startup Weekend in Fort Collins. It is the largest community of entrepreneurs in the world and has hosted 2000+ events in 200+ countries since 2007. Global sponsors of Startup Weekend include Coca-Cola, 3M, Sprint, Intuit, Chase Bank, .CO, and The Case Foundation.

Hatched at Sam's
Fort Collins Startup Week hosts national TV show, Hatched, as they seek out companies to pitch to their execs and investors for a chance to be featured on the show.
The Hatched TV show is it's second season and is coming to Fort Collins, Phoenix and Chicago to find their next batch of great companies to feature on the show and connect to growth opportunities and investment. Think Shark Tank, but with better results for the companies. By having strategic relationships with retail giants Walmart, Sam's Club, and Home Shopping Network, the Hatched crew has "hatched" several brands into the retail space. The Hatched team is currently planning on being at FVC Mesh Fort Collins (242 Linden St) on Feb 27th to see pitches from 20-25 select companies while also filming them in anticipation of bringing them into the show. The next day, they will be selecting more companies to pitch to them in a more relaxed environment, likely without the filming, so they can provide feedback and advice. The first event is very much geared to consumer brands that are ready to have this kind of growth opportunity. The second event is actually open to any type of company and really is just a chance to meet with the execs and investors associated with the show to gain some valuable feedback.
If you/your company is interested in this opportunity, please fill out the following form which will be forwarded directly to the Hatched team. They will be pre-selecting all of the companies that will be pitching either day: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe5Q_O8-yPqgSQ5C7Cnesr3H2_WO18vVLhOg0lBJ-gbvyOd3w/viewform

1 on 1 with Sam's Club
Fort Collins Startup Week hosts national TV show, Hatched, as they seek out companies to pitch to their execs and investors.

The Hatched team is currently planning on being at FVC Mesh Fort Collins (242 Linden St) on Feb 28th to see pitches from 20-25 select companies in a more relaxed environment than the live filming. This event is open to any type of company and is a chance to meet with Sam's Club execs and investors associated with the show to gain some valuable feedback.

Endurance Is The Price Tag of Achievement

Startup life is all about tenacity. Sometimes your plans may become obsolete as society (or technology) evolves. Sometimes the community doesn't hold as much value in your product as they once did before. And sometimes the toll of startup life almost kills you. I've been there. Most (sane) people throw in the towel and quit when the going gets tough, and I've found that "fail fast" doesn't always work in Fort Collins. Entrepreneurs generally aren't sane nor do they quit easily. I'll share how our foray into market research got us ready for a pivot and how burnout led to new business perspective.

Changes to the R&D Tax Credit: New Opportunity for Early Stage Companies

EKS&H presents this Lunch & Learn on how R&D Credits Can Now Offset Payroll Taxes

Attend this session at Innosphere to learn how small businesses can put cash back in their pocket by reducing payroll taxes when they take advantage of the new research credit rules. Taxpayers and practitioners can breathe a long-awaited sigh of relief because the research and development (R&D) tax credit has been made permanent. What’s more, due to some very generous enhancements to the credit rules, it is now more attractive than ever for a large number of companies that previously saw little or no benefit in claiming the credit. Namely, the credit is now available to offset alternative minimum tax (AMT) as well as payroll tax for certain taxpayers.

Unlike most other companies, which bring in sufficient revenue to offset costs, early stage companies often bring in little or no revenue, although they must still cover considerable expenses related to research and development (R&D). This situation puts these early stage companies in a unique position regarding taxes. That’s why we’re excited to bring in EKS&H who can answer all questions on audit and tax!

CSU Ventures Demo Day
Limited Capacity seats available

Join CSU Ventures for demo day at Fort Collins Startup Week. Engage with CSU startup companies.

Demo Day Agenda:
  • 3:00 - 4:00 pm – Presentations
  • 4:00 - 5:00 pm - Networking & Happy Hour

Demo Day Companies:
  • Growcentia was founded by a team of three Colorado State University soil microbiologists that share a passion for enhancing soil health and promoting sustainable agriculture. Using innovative proprietary technology, this team developed an approach to identify and apply nature’s very best microbes to improve nutrient availability to plants. Growcentia's first product Mammoth P is helping thousands of growers around the country maximize the health of their soils or growth media to enhance plant health and yields, while minimizing the environmental impacts of agriculture.

  • Nexus Bioenergy offers a turnkey modular anaerobic digestion appliance for the agriculture, food and beverage industry. Our Bio1 process digests solid waste in a compact footprint with no waste water produced. Since there is no cost to dispose digester wastewater, the Bio1 systems have significantly lower operating costs compared to competition. Nexus offers zero-wastewater anaerobic digesters in formats for a full range of applications for organic waste processing.  Standard anaerobic digesters require lengthy on-site construction with significant project risk. Nexus’s turnkey design is delivered as a preassembled unit that is ready to produce biogas in just a few weeks.

  • Sahti develops a range of highly nutritious, delicious, and sustainable foods. We have two lines of food, one for humans and one for dogs. While this might seem strange, the fact is that the genomes of humans and dogs have evolved together for over 32,000 years!* As quoted by National Geographic, Ya-ping Zhang, a professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Kunming says “in addition to sharing genes that deal with diet and behavior, dogs and humans also share diseases, including obesity, obsessive-compulsive disorder, epilepsy, and some cancers including breast cancer.”

UX for Startups - A Primer for Understanding Your Customers
Limited Capacity filling up

For a startup, understanding your customers may mean the difference between simply shipping, and taking the market by storm. But with tight budgets, and aggressive timelines, how do you include user experience and get the best value for the investment? With a simple process: Learn, Build, Measure, Iterate We’ll help you strike fast with products & services that connect with customers and marketing pitches that entice them. Learn - By far the most important principle in User Experience is 'Know Thy User,' it's how you create great experiences. User Experience is an essential component of understanding your customers, how to connect with them and create products & services that draw them in. Build - Too often when you build your Products and Services, you do so from your own experience, which means you end up designing and building for yourself. By incorporating what you’ve learned into the building process and creating touchstones to keep a laser focus on your customers you will build better products, increase sales and build customer loyalty. Measure - What’s the biggest problem with your current product or service? What new features are your customers most interested in? What’s the difference between ‘it’s fine’ and ‘I’ll never buy anyone else’s?’ While the answer is difference for every company, every product, find out how to answer these questions for your company, your products. Iterate - You did that one thing, that one time to improve your products & services, so you’re good, right? How to keep the momentum going, building a cyclical process to build stronger relationships with your customers and a deeper understand of what they want. By infusing this process into your organization’s culture you’ll learn how to always be in motion, keeping steps ahead of the competition.

Sharkless Tank: Aligning Angel Investors and Entrepreneurs
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Rockies Venture Club (RVC) is excited to host this event as a part of Fort Collins Startup Week. RVC investors pride themselves on being “anti-sharks” and negotiating fair deals for all parties, unlike ABC’s Shark Tank investors who often take 50% or more for their investment. Anti-sharks do well by aligning investments with founders and focusing on the exit strategy. We hope that after this event you will start thinking more like an anti-shark and help turn red oceans blue.
Image removed by sender. RVCNoSharks

The event will consist of two rounds. In the first round each company will give their 5 minute pitch with 5 minutes for feedback and Q&A from the judges. After each pitch the audience will have the chance to rate the presenter on the quality of the pitch and the quality of the investment opportunity. After every company has pitched the votes will be paired with the judge’s votes and the top two companies will move onto the second round. In this second round the companies will pitch their exit strategy to the judges. Again the audience will have the chance to vote and from there the top company will be announced.
